These cute Color Drama Lip Pencils are Maybelline’s take on the NARS Velvet Lip Pencils – except they’re about £13 cheaper! Other bloggers have been raving about them for a while now, so I thought I’d give them a go…
Firstly, I love the packaging. The pencils are pretty chunky which makes them easier to grip and guide when you’re using them (compared to normal-pencil size). The coloured end looks fab, as well as helping you know the shade.
The texture of the pencils is really creamy – the product just slides onto your lips. At first there’s a slight shine, but after a while the colour just melts into your lips beautifully and leaves a natural, matte finish. And the colours themselves are rich, bright and brilliantly pigmented; they’ve also got a very light, fruity smell to them.
And once you’ve got them on, they’re not going anywhere! I’ve found I can get a good 2 hours of wear before the colour starts to fade, but they’ve continued to hang on for at least another 4 hours. They can even survive (some) food and drink!
However, if you’ve got dry lips like me, you might want to apply lip balm either before or after the pencil – as I found that after a few hours of wear my lips were feeling pretty dehydrated! But unless you have pretty dry lips, this shouldn’t be a problem.
You could probably use these as lip liners as well.
There’s currently 9 shades in the collection – from nudes to reds – so you’re bound to find your perfect colour. I chose three: 310 Berry Much, 140 Minimalist and 630 Nude Perfection.
Minimalist is really close to my natural lip colour, but slightly pinker. It’s a really lovely, everyday colour that’s not too cool and not too light.
Nude Perfection is a slightly pink-toned nude and may just be the answer to my quest for my perfect nude lip colour!
Berry Much is a fab, dark-red plum colour. I’ve always wanted to try a dark lip colour, but I’m also a little nervous about applying/wearing them because it’s more obvious if you haven’t done it perfectly! These pencils make the application much easier, but be careful of the colour getting onto your teeth.
Here’s a little swatch of all three colours next to each other:
I’m so so impressed with these little pencils, and I actually prefer them to normal lipstick! Easy to apply, bright colours and long-lasting wear – what more could you want!
Have you tried them out? What did you think?
